What Is a Digital Sunset?

A Digital Sunset is the practice of switching off screens — phone, laptop, TV — at a set time each evening, typically 60-90 minutes before bed. It's one of the five core daily rituals we teach at Earth Built Health, and for good reason: it might be the single most impactful change you can make for your sleep and recovery.

The blue light from screens suppresses melatonin production — the hormone that tells your body it's time to sleep. Even 30 minutes of screen time before bed can delay sleep onset significantly.

Scrolling social media, watching intense shows, or reading emails keeps your brain in alert mode. Your nervous system can't shift into rest-and-digest when it's constantly processing new information.

How to Create Your Digital Sunset

  1. 1Set your time. Choose a consistent time each evening — ideally 60-90 minutes before bed. Put it in your phone as a daily alarm.
  2. 2Create a physical signal. Light a candle, dim the lights, put on calm music. Your body needs a clear signal that the day is ending.
  3. 3Phone goes away. Not on silent — physically in another room, or in a drawer. Out of sight, out of mind.
  4. 4Replace, don't just remove. Read a book, journal, stretch, have a conversation. Fill the space with something nourishing.
